Un duel tragique—Mort de M. Harry Alis The article recounts the tragic duel that led to the death of M. Harry Alis, describing it as a senseless and devastating event. Following a trivial dispute, Alis was killed in a duel by M. Le Chatelier on the Île de la Grande Jatte. The narrative emphasizes that, although the duel was conducted fairly, the real tragedy lies in the fact that it occurred at all. The article reflects on the barbarity of dueling, contrasting it with English customs where dueling is absent without diminishing bravery. It suggests that eliminating duels might reduce the frequency of insults, as without the threat of mortal combat, people would be less inclined to provoke others. The author argues that the nation should preserve the lives of its citizens by abolishing duels, thus preventing unnecessary bloodshed.
