Description

The article mourns the loss of Adolphe Corthey, a prominent figure in the world of fencing, who passed away at the age of sixty-six. Corthey was a dedicated practitioner and instructor, having studied under notable masters such as Pons, Rue, Gabriel, and Graviche. Known affectionately as "le père Corthey," he maintained impressive physical strength through his constant practice of fencing, stick fighting, and weightlifting. While his technique was considered somewhat rough, his character was marked by kindness, warmth, and approachability. In addition to his contributions to fencing, Corthey was also a talented writer, focusing on topics related to fencing and theater. He notably invented the quadrangular-bladed sword and organized major historical fencing exhibitions for the Société d’Encouragement de l’Escrime.

Adolphe Corthey
