TIME THRUSTS
The Fencers Club has been redecorated by the enthusiastic aspirants for berths on the Olympic Epee Team ... the "blood" spots on the ceiling are unique, to say the least ..... Captain Grombach is the answer to a coach's prayer ... he broke all of seven epees during the course of one competition ... "Bobby" Grasson turned up with another of his surprises at the epee tryout; his name is Gafford ..... Norman Armitage had a lame back until recently, but it wasn't enough to stop him at the sabre tryouts ...... Jose Berumen contemplates a trip to Cornell to fence with the boys up there ..... George Santelli was badly scratched on the chin not long ago—what's the matter, Giorgio, can't you parry any more? ..... From the looks of things Yale promises to clean up at the intercollegiates this spring ... specially in epee ...... A dashing fellow, this Frank Righeimer ... they breed them tall, dark and handsome out in Chicago ... Incidentally, he's pretty good with the foil and epee but he should look out for Jim Hutchinson ...... These Olympic tryouts are tests of endurance ... the last one in epee lasted until 11 P.M. ... a few kind Samaritans brought sandwiches and chocolate bars to the starving survivors ..... "Mike" de Capriles gets our vote for the "hard-luck fencer" ... In the five sabre competitions since the 1935 Metropolitan he has failed to finish among the first three only twice ... in the Nationals it was a badly cut eye that forced him to withdraw ... and in the last tryout an injury to his right foot compelled him to default his place in the finals ...... Fritz Weber is the proud father of a second child ... this time, it is a son and heir ..... The last foil tryout was something of a farce ... we have seldom seen so important a competition afflicted by such a scarcity of good judges or held under such adverse conditions ... the beautiful Yale fencing-room floor could not be spoiled by the use of plebeian rosin ... the local talent wore rubber-soled shoes, but the naive New Yorkers and Bostonians were skidding every time they lunged ..... The finals at the New Haven Sword Club were held on two strips which were twelve inches apart and under lights which cast heavy shadows—thus nullifying whatever latent ability there was in the judges who were doing their best to overcome such handicaps ..... We had the pleasure of visiting the Grand Old Man of Fencing, John Allaire, at his home the other day ... we are happy to report to his countless friends that he was well enough to promise to attend the Santelli invitation tournament on Sunday, December 29th ..... Barbara Cochrane was so happy after winning her first medal, a gold one at that, in the Novice event the other night, that she promised to buy your editor a drink ... whereupon six officials promptly accepted ... if she were to win a junior championship we should expect at least champagne ...
