THE BIDDLE TROPHY
In an atmosphere tense with excitement, East Orange came from behind to defeat Flushing in the Annual Washington Square College Foil Team Championship. Flushing was leading 4-2 when Baxter, Joyce, and Corlies of East Orange took the next three bouts in succession to win 5-4.
In the preliminary round there were two major upsets. DeWitt Clinton, last year's winner, and Trinity School, third last year, were both eliminated.
The tournament was notable for the enthusiasm displayed by the spectators, the press, and most of all by the contestants. Being a team match, exhortations, advice, and admonitions were shouted to the fencers by their teammates. Cries of "Attack him, Butch!" and "Just one more point, Jerry!" filled the air. It was marvelous to see the interest the youngsters are taking in the sport. Twenty-eight schools were entered. This tournament is the most important in interscholastic circles, and was well attended by the press and a host of "fans". To make the day a complete success for the boys, Mr. Nadi turned up to autograph their programs.
