ALESSANDRONI STAGES GREAT UPSET
Hugh Alessandroni, star foilsman, came back from his mediocre performance in the Met. Foil to spring the most startling surprise of the year with a spectacular victory in the Metropolitan Epee Championship at the Fencers Club on Feb. 16th.
Fencing with skill and precision which surpassed that of the best-known épéeists in the country, Hugh made a clean sweep of his 8 bouts in the final and finished 3 bouts ahead of his nearest rivals, to score the most convincing triumph yet recorded in an Olympic tryout.
Second place went to Miguel de Capriles, third to Fred Weber, and fourth to the defending champion, Tommy Sands. These places were decided by 13, 15, and 17 touches against respectively, after a tie in bouts.
There were several other surprises, like the elimination of Leo Nunes and George Thompson in the preliminaries, the failure of Tracy Jaeckel and Jose de Capriles to survive the semi-final, and Reiss' lowly seventh place behind Potter and Turner. Peter Hijer, who was knocked out in a collision with Weber in his second bout of the finals, gamely completed his bouts but finished with only one victory.
