SANTOS WINS PERUVIAN TITLE IN EPEE.
Henriques S. Santos, Portuguese swordsman who fenced frequently at the Salle Santelli last fall, and who was THE RIPOSTE's first subscriber, won the Peruvian National Epee Championship on February 16th by defeating the defending champion, Dr. Elias Monnemaison, 5-4.
In Peru, the defending champion is not required to fence through the title rounds. All challengers meet in a tournament to determine the "annual" championship. The winner then earns the right to meet the champion for the national title. Mr. Santos won the annual tournament two weeks before the title match.
Another interesting thing about the affair is that, unlike our own newspaper reports, the Peruvian journal proceeded to criticize the fencers and especially the judges. It not only stated that the judging was very poor, but picked out a particular official as the chief offender. We are tempted to think he exaggerated a little, however, for the journalist himself was obviously prejudiced in favor of the defending champion who had held the title for several years.
At the same time, the Peruvian National Sabre Championship was retained by the defending titleholder, Alfredo Rohager, who won 10-7 over the challenger and annual champion, Victor Flores.
