Mr. Feraud, of the Los Angeles A.C., has sent us an interesting bit of news which puts a touch of realism in the movie version of "Anthony Adverse"; it is the notice that Claude Rains and Louis Hayward, in a rehearsal of the duel scene, engaged in a spirited exchange of thrusts... not until it was over was it discovered that Rains' weapon had made an inch-long cut in Hayward's forehead ---- Col. Henry Breckinridge was nominated for the Presidency of the United States in the Maryland primaries ---- Capt. W.F. Schmidt, well known in N.Y. fencing circles and for 25 years fencing master of the National Guard, has trained his granddaughter, Ardith Verity, in foil, épée and sabre as well as in the use of a bayonet. According to the Captain, she has the distinction of being the only woman in the world adept in all four ---- Warren Dow points out the interesting fact that there are only 5 active fencers who have a senior rating in all three weapons... they are Hones, Murray, Dow, and the two de Capriles brothers ---- Nick Murray took off his wrist watch in the middle of a foil bout last week, whereupon Sam Stewart remarked, "There goes Nick's timing" ---- The Italian Fencing Club has joined forces with the Brooklyn Fencers Club ---- John Allaire sends us this echo from the past... A great many years ago there was a cup in play at Philadelphia called the Hawkins Cup. The N.Y. Turn Verein entered a team consisting of Albert Straus, John Allaire and Paul Benzenberg... No decision was made until the end of the evening when it was announced that Philadelphia had won. The Turn Verein was under the impression it had won, but finally found out that although Paul Benzenberg had beaten Fleisher 5-3, the jury decided that Benzenberg was a much better fencer and should have won 5-0. The decision was therefore given to Fleisher and Philadelphia won ---- Aldo Nadi is going to give an exhibition lecture with Barbara Cochrane at a Junior League Luncheon on March 9th.
