GIRLS vs. MEN
Friendly boos for the men and cheers for the girls filled the Salle d'Armes Santelli during the mixed team competition. Ten teams participated in an afternoon of fencing that was most enjoyable. The whole atmosphere was one of friendliness and levity, and we feel sure that all who witnessed it will agree with us that the meet was a great success. This was the first official competition, in this part of the country, where the women fenced men and we are in the hope that the practice will be continued in future seasons.
The combination of Marion Lloyd and John R. Huffman won the two prizes donated by Mr. Leo Nunes and Dr. Ervin Acel, by defeating Dorothy Locke and Emil Goldstein in the final round. The two strongest teams to fall by the wayside were those consisting of Joanna de Tuscan and Miguel de Capriles, and of Maria Cerra and Nickolas Muray.
In only two cases did a woman defeat a man, and both these bouts took place in the first round. Miss Barbara Cochrane downed Henry Shrapiro and Miss Mildred Stewart defeated Ralph Goldstein.
