RAPIER CLUB GALA
Arrayed in our very best, we attended the Gala night held in honor of the visiting Navy team at John Jay Hall. The event presented the largest collection of stars ever assembled in the east. We were not only treated to some very fine fencing matches, but we were also privileged to watch jiu-jitsu and Japanese fencing as done by experts. The comic relief was provided by Hugh Alessandroni and Dernel Every in a balloon fight which brought the audience to its feet with gales of laughter. Norman Armitage acted as master of ceremonies and conducted the affair in a light, bantering manner which went very well with the festive spirit of the evening.
Marion Lloyd and Dorothy Locke staged a very good exhibition bout, as did Dernel Every, Hugh Alessandroni, and Prof. Dolzadri of Navy. Mr. Pinchard and Mr. Fiems demonstrated the new electrical epee, but unfortunately their excellent fencing was marred by a defect in Mr. Pinchard’s weapon. The highlight of the affair was a sabre lesson given to John Huffman by Prof. Santelli. At the conclusion of one of the fast phrases which never fail to thrill the audience, John’s weapon broke over Giorgio’s head—a dramatic ending for a perfectly executed series of actions.
