Dorothy Locke, showing a marked improvement over her previous performances this season, won the women’s Olympic tryout on March 12th. Miss Locke’s fencing was by far the best we’ve seen this year. Her point was in line and her calmness on the strip emphasized the nervous temperament of the other contestants. Marion Lloyd placed second by virtue of the defeat suffered at the hands of Miss Locke in the final round. It was the first time in several tries this season that Dorothy was able to out-score her perennial rival. Carol Alossandroni finished a strong third, thus displacing Jeanne de Tuscan from the top three for the first time since her arrigal from Detroit. Mrs. de Tuscan seemed unable to judge her distance correctly and her point failed to find the target with the customary speed and accuracy which has marked her fencing this season. Mrs. Funko, Miss Cerra, Miss Dalton, and Miss Grassib completed the round-robin of 8 and placed in that order.

The finish of the final round of the Metropolitan Championship found Dorothy Locke and Jeanne de Tuscan tied for first place with 5 wins and 1 loss. In the fence-off, Dorothy, who had suffered her only set-back at the hands of Jeanne, defeated the latter with a series of well-executed ripostes. The fencing as a whole showed a marked improvement which promises to make the final tryouts really worth while. Marion Lloyd placed third, while the Misses Guggolz, Alessandroni, and Cerra followed in that order. Since the finals only consisted of six fencers, and the competition was an Olympic tryout, there was a fence-off for 7th and 8th places between Barbara Cochrane and Dorothy Hafner. Barbara won 7th and Dorothy came 8th.

The Salle Vince continued its unquestioned supremacy in women’s fencing by defeating the Fencers Club 5-0 in the finals of the Team Championship. We doubt if there is a club in the country at the present time that could muster up a trio which would give them serious opposition.
