FIDDLERS AND FENCERS (N.Y. Times)
Premier Mussolini fiddled while dedicating the largest fencing hall in the world, capable of accommodating 300 fencers. Mussolini’s name was not on the programme as a violin virtuoso, but he came to the rescue of a young Fascist violinist who was undergoing quite a struggle with his instrument. Il Duce grasped the violin and, much to the delight of his young followers, proceeded to execute some excellent flourishes.
The hall for the fencers sounds like the answer to a fencer’s prayer, to say nothing of the coaches. Imagine the short time it will now take to run off competitions!
