EXHIBITION AT HEMPSTEAD
Eighteen fencers, including local talent, participated in a fine exhibition last Tuesday evening at the Hempstead High School Gymnasium. The event took place under the auspices of N.Y.U.’s new Nassau College and the Olympic Committee.
Jose de Capriles fenced epee with Webster Williams, amateur coach at Nassau College. Webb’s younger brother, Calvin, and Ted Dunne, student at N.Y.U., each fenced foil with Hugo Castello. The Ladies' contingent included Joanna de Tuscan, Barbara Cochrane, Dorothy Hafner, and Hildred Stewart. Among the other amateurs present were Warren Dow, Jose Berumen, Dernell Every, Pieter Mijer, and Sam Stewart. Miguel de Capriles officiated as master of ceremonies.
Much curiosity and speculation was aroused in the large audience, numbering close to 400, by the demonstration of the electrical epee by Professors Rems and Pinchart. The “hits” of the evening, however, were George Santelli and John Huffman, whose brilliant sabre exhibition brought the house down. We have never heard such an ovation for fencing, and the audience was not satisfied until an “encore” had been rendered.
The exhibition lasted over two hours, but the interest of the onlookers was sustained throughout — in fact, much to our surprise, there were some who still wanted more.
