OLYMPIC COMMITTEE PICKS THE TEAM
The Olympic Committee, consisting of Alessandroni, J. de Capriles, Every, Mr. Hammond, Hanway, Levis, O'Connor, Shoonmaker, and Van Buskirk, met the day after the National Championships and selected the following team to represent the U.S. in the Olympic Games at Berlin:
Foil:
Alessandroni
Dow
Every
Levis
Pecora
Potter
Epee:
Boyd
J. de Capriles
Heiss
Righeimer
Sands
Weber
Sabre:
Armitage
Bruder
M. de Capriles
de Nagy
Huffman
Stewart
At the beginning of the past season, the Committee established a series of Olympic tryouts to provide a point system to aid in the final selection of the team. It was understood that the Committee would use its own discretion in close cases. The final standings of the first ten men in these tryouts are as follows:
Foil:
Alessandroni 102
Levis 98
Huffman 69
Dow 66
Every 60
Righeimer 42
Pecora 34
Hurd 33
Castello 29
Potter 26
Epee:
Weber 71
Sands 70
M. de Capriles 64
J. de Capriles 61
Heiss 58
Jaeckel 49
Boyd **
Righeimer 36
Potter 28
Alessandroni 22
**His third place in the Nationals automatically gave him a place, in accordance with the Western Rule.
Sabre:
Armitage 108
Huffman 91
Bruder 79
M. de Capriles 56
Muray 51
Stewart 40
Acel 36
de Nagy 17
J. de Capriles 17
Cantor 16
Huffman & M. de Capriles were dropped from the foil and epee respectively to be named in the sabre. Muray & Acel were dropped in sabre in favor of de Nagy. Righeimer, who ranked 5th in foil and 7th in epee, was placed on the epee team, thus dropping Jaeckel to the position of alternate and placing Potter, who ranked last, on the foil team. This shift is unfathomable to us, in view of the late Lt. Calnan's report of the 1932 Olympics, where he mentions Heiss and Jaeckel as our best international fencers in this weapon and expresses the opinion that this year's epee team should be built around them.
