PHILADELPHIA OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Outdoor Sabre championship was held at the beautiful estate of Mr. and Mrs. L. Alan Passmore in Penn Valley on May 6th. A large audience attended the fencing and the tea which followed.
The championship was won by Richard F. Warden of the Sword Club, while two relatively new fencers from Haverford College came second and third. They were Sykes and Firth respectively.
The Outdoor Epee championship drew an entry of fourteen fencers, nine of whom were from New York. The event was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Shakespeare and a grand time was had by all.
Jose de Capriles won the title with four victories and one loss in the final, while Pieter Mijer, Tracy Jaeckel and Wayne Martin tied for second and placed in that order on touches.
The surprise of the tournament was the left-handed Wayne Martin of Philadelphia, who fenced in excellent form. He defeated every ranking fencer during the course of the competition. Alessandroni and J. de Capriles were his victims in the first round, while Jaeckel, Mijer and M. de Capriles bowed to him in the final. Pieter Mijer was unusually accurate with his shot to the toe, and scored 13 touches in 11 bouts with it. He handed J. de Capriles his only defeat in the final, and that to the score of 3-0. Tracy Jaeckel was the only one to escape with a clean shoe Tracy, who finished third on touches, fenced his usual steady game.
