en LEFT AND RIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Leonard L. Boyer, Pennsylvania Freshman from Georgia, won the "Left and Right" Fencers' Novice Championship held at the Salle of Mr. Leonardo Terrones, Penn coach. This left and right association is one of Mr. Terrones’ ideas and the competition was decidedly different to say the least. Bouts were for two out of three touches with foil, and were governed by rules very different from ours. Boyer fenced Harry Gonzales, northeast High senior, in the deciding bout. They each scored once with the left hand and then shifted to the right for the deciding touch. In foil, according to their rules, the target is only the half of the body facing the opponent. It was not until three of Gonzales' touches had been ruled out that Boyer scored the winning tally. Gonzales’ first touch was on the "wrong side" and the two others were too light to be counted. The jury was composed of four U. of P. men and one from Upper Darby Junior High.
