en NATIONAL OUTDOOR (?) SABRE CHAMPIONSHIP

Dr. John R. Huffman, 1934 champion, regained the outdoor sabre championship on the strips of the Salle Santelli on June 14th, after inclement weather for the second year in a row had forced the tournament indoors. "Johnny" swept all five of his bouts in the final to finish far ahead of his rivals in the closest, most keenly contested sabre competition of the year.

Final Bouts (W/L) | Touches (VS/FOR) | Total Wins (W/L)
Huffman: 5/0 | 16/25 | 12/1
Bruder: 3/2 | 18/23 | 12/3
Acel: 2/3 | 19/17 | 9/5
M. de Capriles: 2/3 | 20/21 | 8/4
Armitage: 2/3 | 21/19 | 11/3
Murray: 1/4 | 24/13 | 8/5

Bruder fenced beautifully, both his defeats in the final being by 5-4 scores against Huffman and Armitage. His third defeat in the tournament was again at the hands of Huffman in the semi-final.

In the close fight for third honors, Acel won by virtue of his 5-2 conquests over Armitage and Murray. In the final bout of the evening, the N.Y.A.C. veteran faced M. de Capriles and the latter would have to win 5-1 to nose out Acel for the bronze medal. Acel, however, scored two touches early in the bout to clinch the place.

The great upset of the championship was of course Armitage’s 5th place. Winner of every tournament he had entered this year, the indoor champion was in fine fettle, winning his first 10 bouts in a row. Then Acel, Huffman, and M. de Capriles stopped his winning march, as lack of training due to law examinations took its toll.

The showing of Acel and Murray, alternates on the Olympic sabre team, bore out their season’s record. Murray, who fenced brilliantly through the semi-finals, where he gave Huffman his lone defeat of the tournament, faltered in the finals. Yet the two men on the Olympic team who were displaced in the finals by the alternates, Stewart and Nagy, were close behind the leaders in their semi-final pools. The results clearly established these 8 men at the top of the sabre rankings and indicate a nicely balanced Olympic team with this weapon.
