INTERNATIONAL RULES GOVERNING EQUIPMENT
General: (1) All clothing must be white, for ladies as well as gentlemen. (2) In foil, the clothing of women fencers must include flowing trousers fastened anywhere below the knee. (3) It is recommended that, in foil and sabre, the jacket be cut in such a fashion as to cover entirely the valid target. (4) The bib and visor of the mask must be white in all weapons. For epee and sabre such parts of the mask as are liable to come in contact with the adversary's weapon must be white or light ecru color.
Weapons: (1) Any contrivance which strengthens the hold of the fencer on his weapon must allow only one position of the hand upon the handle, in such a way that the thumb, wholly extended, rests no further than 20 mm. from the internal surface of the guard.
(2) The martingale is obligatory in foil and epee. That is, when the hand is NOT affixed to the handle by a special contrivance, the weapon must be LOOSELY attached to the hand by a string loop, in order to prevent injury to third parties in case of disarmament.
(3) Strapping the foil to the hand or wrist is expressly authorized. Without such a strap, the martingale is compulsory.
(4) The minimum weight of the sabre is 325 grams. No minimum weight is prescribed for foil and epee.
(5) The remaining specifications for maximum weight in all weapons, maximum length overall, maximum length of blade, maximum dimensions of the guard, etc., remain as provided for in the American rules.
(6) Rigid tests, with special gauges, are provided before the competition for all weapons to be used therein.
