WOMEN'S FOIL
Marion Lloyd and Dorothy Locke, veterans in the Olympics, reached the semi-final but won only 1 bout each at that stage of the tournament and were eliminated. Joanna de Tuscan, American champion but a newcomer to the international games, was unable to pass the first round, winning only 1 bout in 5. Forty-two contestants entered.
Miss Lloyd had the best American record. In the first round, she won 3 and lost 2, including a 5-1 victory over Denmark's finalist, Karen Lachmann. In the quarter-final, Miss Lloyd lost only to Helene Mayer, winning 3 bouts (one not fenced). Then, in the semi-final, Miss Lloyd beat Miss Oelkers of Germany, but lost 5-4 to Miss Helen Preiss, 1932 Olympic Champion, and to Germany's Miss Hauss; and by 5-3 to Miss Addams of Belgium, and Miss Vargha of Hungary.
Miss Locke won 3 victories in the first round, including a bout over Miss Addams. In the quarter-final, Miss Locke tied with Miss Bogathy of Hungary for the last qualifying place with two victories each. In the fence-off, Miss Locke repeated her conquest of Miss Bogathy and won 5-2.
In the semi-final, Miss Locke defeated 5-1 England's Mrs. Penn-Hughes, who under her maiden name (Guinness), was runner-up in 1932; then Miss Locke dropped four bouts and was eliminated.
In the finals, Mrs. Schacherer-Elek, of Hungary, won the championship with 6 victories and 1 defeat (at the hands of Miss Hauss). Miss Mayer, 1928 champion and winner of our American championship while residing in the United States, was runner-up, losing only to Mrs. Schacherer-Elek and to Miss Preiss, 1932 champion, both times by 5-4. Miss Preiss came 3rd on touches, losing to Miss Hauss and to the new champion. Miss Hauss was 4th on touches, as she lost only to Miss Mayer and Miss Vargha. Miss Mayer received 19 hits, Miss Preiss 20 and Miss Hauss 23. The rest of the field was far behind.
