MEN'S INDIVIDUAL FOIL
Joe Levis, after duplicating in the first three rounds his remarkable performance in the team events, by winning 15 of his 16 bouts, tired and was eliminated in the semi-final with 1 victory and 5 defeats. Joe's pace was too exhausting. In the first round, he won 6 bouts with only 13 touches scored against him; in the second round, Belgium's Valcke squeezed a 5-4 victory over Levis but the latter managed to win his other 4 bouts with ease, including among his victims finalist Bocchino of Italy. In the quarter-final, Joe made a clean-sweep of 5 victories beating, among others, Edward Gardere, France, runner-up in the finals, and Bru of Belgium, another finalist. When the semi-finals came, however, Joe beat Lemoine of France 5-0 and then lost to Casmir of Germany, de Bourguignon of Belgium, Guaragna of Italy, Bay of Hungary and E. Gardere of France.
Bill Pecora showed the next best advantage. He won 4 and lost 3 in the first round, climaxing his excellent performance with a 5-4 defeat of Great Britain’s Pearce, who is well remembered in this country as a member of the 1934 team. In the second round Bill won 2 and lost 3, defeating Jungquist of Sweden 5-1. The latter, however, tied Bill for the last qualifying place and reversed the decision on the fence-off, defeating Pecora 5-4.
Hugh Alessandroni broke even in the first round with 3 wins and 3 losses, but could win only 1 in the second round — where he defeated 5-2 Italy’s third place winner, Guaragna.
A total of 66 fencers started. Gaudini of Italy was first, Edward Gardere of France second, and Guaragna of Italy third. Germany’s captain, Casmir, was fourth, and the third member of the Italian team, Bocchino, was fifth.
