en A LETTER FROM ARTHUR LYON

Our technical adviser wrote Mr. Lyon and commented on the beautiful design of the Lyon medals which he awards every year to the winner of the Outdoor Épée Championship. We think you would like to know something about this medal and to hear Mr. Lyon's advice to the Olympic fencers. Mr. Lyon is a veteran Olympian and a former captain of the American team. He said:

"The King Louis helmet engraved on the medal is a reproduction of the original helmet which is now in the Art Museum in Central Park, a collection, I am informed, that is estimated worth between 11 and 15 million dollars. This particular helmet, I am reliably informed by the museum, was purchased by J.P. Morgan, he having given fifty thousand dollars for it.

"In my attempt to create a medal of interest, I selected a helmet of a King, a warrior, and had it reproduced in gold, silver, and bronze with a rapier to further emphasize the sport...

"I wish you every success abroad, and to you I give the same advice as has been given to me as a member of three past Olympic teams: 'Carry and conduct yourself as an American ambassador and a sportsman, win or lose.'"
