en MIGUEL DE CAPRILES DIRECTS FINAL

Miguel de Capriles became the first American to direct an Olympic final held in Europe, when he was chosen as one of the five directors to officiate at the finals of the Individual Sabre Championship. Only Harold Van Buskirk, who presided at the final sabre team match between Italy and Hungary at Los Angeles, has been so honored before, although Americans have on several occasions acted as judges. Under the new plan used this year, all officials at the finals are directors, who rotate clockwise after every bout, so that each directs one-fifth of the bouts.

THE RIPOSTE is especially glad to feature this news about the only American to make the Olympic final in Berlin in any capacity because Mike de Capriles, as our technical advisor, has been conducting a popular series of articles on the art of judging and directing. Our readers will be interested to know that “Mike”’s selection was made after the Technical Committee had seen his flawless handling of a second-round pool. In the final, it was the consensus of opinion of the expert observers that he was the best official on the jury, which included some of the best-known European directors.
