en OLYMPIC SIDELIGHTS
The XIth Olympiad showed that the sabre leads as an international weapon ... 22 nations entered teams, and 76 individuals from 29 countries were listed for the individual events ... The epee was second, with 21 teams entered, and 75 individual entries from 27 countries ... only 18 teams and 60 individuals from 24 nations were entered in the men’s foil ... the Ladies' foil drew 42 entrants from 16 countries----Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Hungary, Rumania, Switzerland, and the U.S. were represented in all the events ... Argentina, Bulgaria, Egypt, Greece, and Italy, while sending men in all weapons, had no female fencers----Spain would be included among these countries except that none of her representatives appeared, perhaps because of the Civil War----Mexico sent entries for all weapons, but only two men appeared ... they selected to fence only epee and sabre, and then withdrew from the sabre because of the Haro Oliva incident----Norway entered teams in foil and epee only; Poland had an epee and sabre team; Portugal had an epee team only, while Turkey and Uruguay sent only a sabre team----Costa Rica and Peru sent only one man each, both of whom fenced sabre----Our unofficial score shows that Italy was by far the best team in the field, as it won 4 championships (foil team and individual, epee team and individual)----Next was Hungary, who took the remaining 3 titles (sabre team and individual, and the women's individual foil)----The Italians collected second place medals in sabre team, sabre individual and epee individual, plus a third place medal in the foil and epee individual ... while Hungary won only one additional medal, third place in the sabre individual----Germany rates the third ranking, placing all its teams in the finals, taking third in the foil and sabre teams and second place in the women's foil----France, making its poorest showing in Olympic history, rated fourth, with second places in the foil team and individual and third place in the epee team----Sweden might be granted the fifth place by virtue of its epee team's record ... though Austria had a slightly better balanced team with third place in women's foil, placing the men's foil team in the final and the sabre team in the semi-final----This accounts for all the medal winners ... The United States, Poland, and Belgium rated next, closely bunched together----
