SHORT NOTES
Kathleen Hughes Hallett, pretty member of the Canadian Olympic Team, recently underwent a serious operation for the removal of cartilage in both knees. The 18 year old blond star suffered an accident a couple of years ago. The attending doctor at the hospital in London, England, was astonished to learn that she had fenced all this time, but was of the opinion that she will fence better than ever when she is up and about again. In the Olympics, despite her condition, Miss Hughes Hallett did remarkably well. She defeated Miss Gripenstedt, of Sweden, and lost to Belgium’s Jenny Addams, a finalist, only 5-4. Miss Hughes-Hallett has been fencing for 2 ½ years at the Salle de Tuscan of Detroit. THE RIPOSTE wishes her a most speedy recovery.
George Santelli, recently returned from the Olympic trip, has been engaged by the famous Mr. Leslie Howard to produce the fencing scenes for "Hamlet." Mr. Howard is setting the play in its original 12th century background—an interesting departure from the traditional Elizabethan anachronism. As the fencing scene is the climax of the play, exceptional care has been taken to present a historically accurate match. Mr. Howard’s "Hamlet" will open in New York on November 8th at the Imperial Theatre.
