VAN BUSKIRK TAKES OFFICE
The annual meeting of the Board of Governors in September marked the beginning of Mr. Harold Van Buskirk's term as President of the A.F.L.A. The feature of the meeting, at which routine matters were discussed, was "Van's" opening address, which pledged in no uncertain terms his single aim to work for the good of fencing, regardless of local or personal politics.
Van Buskirk, one of the most popular fencers in the country, holds a long record of achievement, both as a fencer and as an administrator. He was intercollegiate foil champion while an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, and has won the National epee and sabre individual championships. He was a member of the 1924, 1928, and 1932 Olympic Sabre teams, and had been chosen to captain the 1936 team. His resignation of the team leadership was felt to be a great loss. "Van" was Chairman of the Bout Committee and a member of the Board of Governors for a number of years before his election last spring to the highest office of the A.F.L.A.
