BOYD WINS "DUFF SWORDS"
Andrew Boyd, star of the Swedish-American epee match at the Olympic Games this summer, won the Outdoor Epee held at Beverly Hills last month. There were 17 entrants, and the tournament was held as a complete round-robin. Boyd, a member of the Los Angeles A.C., earned his victory with 14½ wins in 16 bouts. Fred Linkmeyer and Charles Smith placed in that order with 11 wins each. The three winners are club-mates. Merwin Kendis was 4th, Wayland Gilbert 5th, and Charles Cathcart 6th.
The surprise of the tournament was the failure of such stars as Cmdr. Doughty, Graig, Corbin, and McGraw to place among the top-notchers.
This was Andy’s third victory in this tournament and gave him permanent possession of the "Duff Swords," which had also been won twice by Fred Linkmeyer. The tournament had been originally scheduled for the earlier part of the summer, but the division postponed the event until "Andy" returned from the Olympic Games in order to enable him to defend his title.
