We were very proud to see the Christian Science Monitor devote nearly an entire paragraph of recognition in its story covering the coming fencing season----Sgt. Hendricks tried out for the German Pentathlon team and was promoted to Lieutenant when he made it. It just wouldn’t do to have a lowly sergeant compete with all those foreign officers. When Lt. Hendricks won the Pentathlon event, Hitler rewarded him with a captaincy and a bonus. It sounds as if Horatio Alger had written it----Princeton had a gala evening after the Cornell Game, and such Olympic stars as Santelli, Lewis, Armitage, and Pecora assisted in giving a swell fencing exhibition... Pierre Mottet, who has just come over from France and who held their Intercollegiate Championship last year, was an unexpected and popular added attraction----Miguel and Jose de Capriles, Mexican-born American citizens of Dutch-Spanish parentage, placed first and second in the sabre Piannoadlho-hecht (fencing exhibition tournament to you), which featured the 4th annual Feis of the United Irish Counties Association… Joe Donovan, who arranged the matches, figured that if a De Valera could be president of the Irish Free State, "Mike" and "Joe" sound typical Erin names and nicknames----Gardner Mulloy Jr. has just returned from Switzerland, where he took lessons from Prof. Moccet, who was coach of the Swiss Olympic Team. Mr. Flems has recently accepted a coaching position at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he will aid Mr. Belardini in training the midshipmen----Ralph B. Faulkner, many times western epee and sabre champion and a former Olympic man, is now professional. He has opened the Faulkner School of Fencing at 1759 N. Highland Avenue in Hollywood----Aldo Nadi has been teaching fencing to the beauty-seekers at Elizabeth Arden’s----A Bronx fencing club has just been organized with a view of providing upper Manhattan with a fencing centre. Leonard Miller, former pupil of Mr. Joseph Vince, is teaching fencing while his associate Capt. Schmidt will initiate a physical training program----Arthur Fregosi, well known in fencing circles these past few years, has turned professional and is holding classes in the Bronx----The Brooklyn Fencers Club is now known as the Metropolitan Fencers Club; their headquarters are now at 247 East 53 Street----Marcel Pasche is now coaching at St. John’s College as well as at Bryn Mawr----John Allaire was 80 years old on October 23 and he hopes to return to fencing as soon as the doctors permit it----Has anyone heard of Ellie McLendon? He was last seen in Chicago…All is forgiven, Ellie; come on home.
