FENCERS CLUB TRIO WINS TEAM TITLE
The N.Y. Fencers Club team, consisting of Henry B. Wesselman, Irving Cantor and Joseph Ulman, defeated the N.Y.A.C. in the finals of the Jr. Team Foil Championship held at the New York Athletic Club on December 8th.
The finals was made doubly interesting by the old rivalry which exists between the two clubs. For many years they had dominated the field, and it was the usual climax to a competition to have those two rivals fight it out in the finals. Lately, however, such dramatic meetings have been few and far apart.
The N.Y.A.C. team, of Frank Ingoglia, S.T. Stewart Jr., and Ralph Marson, was forced to knock out the defending champions, N.Y.U., before it could earn a place in the finals. The Fencers Club reached the final bracket at the expense of the Greco Fencing Academy. Both finalists fought every inch of the way, but despite Imoglio’s three victories the A.C. wasn’t strong enough to hold the Fencers Club. Much of the credit should be given to the team captain, Irving Cantor, who was very much on the alert, while on the side-lines, and who won the deciding bout of the match.
Thirteen teams competed, the others being St. John’s, Salle d’Armes Vince, Y.M.C.A. “A” and “B”, N.Y.U. “A” and “B”, Columbia, Saltus, and a composite team of the Metropolitan-U.F.C.
