Jose de Capriles Wins Sr. Foils
Defeating Hugh Alessandroni, national champion, in a hard-fought 5-4 fence-off, Jose de Capriles won his first major victory in foil individual competition when he took the gold medal in the A.F.L.A. foil tournament limited to senior men. The field consisted of six men who showed fair early-season form. When the round-robin was completed, J. de Capriles had lost to Alessandroni 5-2 and the latter had been beaten by Huffman 5-2, so that the fence-off was required. The lead see-sawed back and forth, until the score stood at 4-all. Then, on Alessandroni's attack, J. de Capriles lunged with a beautifully executed stop thrust in opposition that scored the winning tally.
Hugo Castello, intercollegiate champion, won the bronze medal by virtue of his three victories, although he was lucky to squeeze two 5-4 wins over his N.Y. A.C. teammates, Huffman and Every. Huffman was 4th by the margin of one touch over Every, after each finished with 2 victories. "Johnny" was fencing below top form and lost two bouts 5-4 after being on the short end of a 4-1 score. Dernell fenced erratically, sometimes scoring spectacular touches, and then, especially against J. de Capriles, badly misjudging his distance so that his opponent was able to score repeatedly on direct attacks. Miguel de Capriles, a last-minute addition to the field, was far below top form and lost all his bouts decisively.
