en SANDS WINS SR. EPEE IN SECOND FENCE-OFF

Lt. Thomas J. Sands, flashing excellent mid-season form, won the A.F.L.A. Senior Epee individual tournament conducted with electrical weapons at the Salle Santelli. Sands defeated Tracy Jaeckel in the 2nd fence-off for first place by the score of 3-2.

Sands, Jaeckel, Jose de Capriles, and Joseph E. Barmack, former junior champion, finished the final round-robin tied for first place with 3 victories each. Sands and Jaeckel each won 2 bouts in the first fence-off, while J. de Capriles and Barmack each won one. In the count of touches for third place, J. de Capriles won the place by virtue of a 3-touch margin in touches given, after both had received 8 touches.

The place winners received special medals brought back from Budapest by Miguel de Capriles and named in honor of Leo Nunes, the most consistent American epee champion in the last fifteen years.

Sands won the gold medal because he was able to beat Jaeckel each of the 3 times they met. J. de Capriles also scored 3 victories over Sands in the times they met, but Jaeckel beat J. de Capriles every time he faced him. The representatives of the Olympic epee team in the competition, therefore, were very closely matched. But it was the splendid performance of "Jeb" Barmack, back in the lists after a long lay-off, that proved the greatest surprise. Barmack led his preliminary pool, and held his own with the Olympic men until his last two bouts, when Sands and Jaeckel each beat him 3-0.

Hugh Alessandroni and Pieter Mijer completed the final pool and finished in that order. August von Hunchhausen, Jr., champion in 1935, missed qualification by one touch after tying with J. de Capriles and Mijer in the preliminary. Twelve seniors competed.
