en N.Y.A.C. WINS JR. SABRE TEAM

The N.Y.A.C. trio of Ralph Marson, Jim Hutchinson, and Hugo Castello turned back the defending champions from the Salle d’Armes Vince in the final round to win the junior sabre team title by a 5-2 score.

The Winges Foot club presented a nicely balanced combination of steady performers, led by Hutchinson’s 6 wins in 8 bouts. Hutchinson carried the team through its first match with 3 victories over the University Fencers Club team of Jordan Uttal, Nevis Kapner, and Max Frank, although it was Castello’s 5-2 victory over Frank that saved the day for the A.C.

In the semi-final, the eventual winners caught another tartar in the Columbia Rapier Club. The first bout pitted Marson against Bertsche, and with the score at 2-1 for Marson, the bout had to be suspended because Ralph’s glasses had broken. The N.Y.A.C. gained a 4-1 lead, and then in a spectacular comeback Bertsche, Lambaer, and Mateosian won successive bouts to tie the score. Therefore it was necessary to resume the suspended bout between Marson and Bertsche, and Marson went through to win 5-3.

For the Vince team, Cornell Wilde was outstanding, winning 6 out of 7 bouts, and being largely responsible for the defeat of the Yale team of Viscidi, Steinberg, and Ebel. Second in the standing for the Salle Vince was Julio Cerra, who continued his record of steady performances in team events. The third member of the team, Joseph Barmack, was effective only against the C.C.N.Y. team.

Among the individuals who distinguished themselves in losing causes were Uttal and Frank, U.F.C.; Kaplan and Marks, C.C.N.Y.; Cantor and Alessandroni, Fencers Club; Gorlin, N.Y.U.; Ebel, Yale; and Bertsche, Columbia Rapier Club.
