VOORHIS COMPETITION WON BY MISS MARIA CERRA
The Voorhis Medal Tournament, first women’s open competition of 1937 and one of the most interesting and traditional competitions on the schedule, was won by Miss Maria Cerra of the Salle d’Armes Vince, at the Fencers Club.
Miss Mildred Stewart, Intercollegiate champion from Hunter College, and Miss Dorothy Grimmelman of N.Y.U., took the remaining medals on touches—placing ahead of Miss Barbara Cochrane of the Salle Santelli after the three had finished in a tie in bouts won.
The splendid performance of the finalists was dimmed by the fact that, except for Miss Ann Jones, Junior Champion two years ago, who was eliminated early, the competition was composed of juniors and novices and included none of the leading senior foilwomen of the country. Normally the field is reminiscent of that in the National Championship, but not this time. Mrs. de Tuscan was in Detroit, and the four ranking metropolitan fencers, Miss Locke, Miss Lloyd, Miss Alessandroni, and Miss Guglielma, were unaccountably absent.
It was unfortunate that this was the case, because Miss Cerra was fencing very well, even though she dropped one bout in the final, and she might have scored a real upset against the established leaders of the game if the opportunity had been presented. Her performance, however, shows the promise of a successful season and she will have many other chances to cross blades with her rivals at the top.
