CANADIAN NATIONAL FENCING CHAMPIONSHIPS
George Tully, of the North Branch Y.M.C.A., and member of the Canadian Olympic Team, made a spectacular record by winning all three of the Canadian Fencing Championships. The Dominion of Canada held its Championships on the Victoria Day weekend, May 22, 23 and 24. The place was Montreal, probably the foremost fencing city in the Dominion.
The foil championships were held in the Central Y.M.C.A. Tully made a clean sweep of his bouts. Ernest Gitterman, of the Montreal Y.M.H.A., placed a handy second, losing only to Tully. Don Collinge, of the Toronto Sword Club, and title-holder of 1936, placed third with two losses. The final standing follows:
Foil
George Tully, N.B.Y.M.C.A. - Montreal
Ernest Gitterman, Y.M.H.A. - Montreal
Don Collinge, Toronto Sword Club
Jack Dalton, Toronto Sword Club
M. Seibert, Winnipeg Sword Club
J. Charles Otis, Y.M.C.A. - Montreal
The epee championships were held at the Y.M.H.A. on the following day, and E. Dalton, winner of the title last year, was unable to participate. Once again George Tully came to the fore with a surprising display of swordsmanship which won the title for him. Gitterman again trailed Tully by one bout to place second, and Alf Horn of the Central Y.M.C.A. squeezed out a third place after tying with two others in bouts won. The final standing follows:
Epee -
George Tully, N.B.Y.M.C.A. - Montreal
Ernest Gitterman, Y.M.H.A. - Montreal
Alf Horn, Montreal Y.M.C.A. - Montreal
M. Seibert, Winnipeg Sword Club
J. Dalton, Toronto Sword Club
C. Tapsell, Toronto Sword Club
Monday morning saw the fencers back on the floor of the Central Y.M.C.A. in an attempt to wrest the sabre title from Don Collinge of Toronto. Tully did this very thing in a very efficient manner. His victory in the three weapons makes him the first man in Canadian history ever to hold the three titles in one season. Collinge placed second in the sabre, while Seibert took third. Dalton, Horn, Gitterman, and Tapsell followed in that order.
