HELENA MAYER WINS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Helena Mayer, Olympic champion in 1928, and American champion in 1934, 1935, and 1937, regained top-ranking among the world’s foilswomen by a spectacular victory in the championships at Paris. Miss Mayer outscored the 1936 Olympic Champion, Ilona Schacherer-Elek, of Hungary, who finished second, and the 1932 Olympic Champion, Ellen Preis, of Austria, who finished third. The same three women took medals in the 1936 Olympiad, Mrs. Schacherer-Elek taking first, Miss Mayer second, and Miss Preis third.
