en SALLE SANTELLI WINS CARTIER TROPHY

The Salle Santelli team, composed of Warren Dow, Jose de Capriles, and Norman Lewis, won the Open Foil Team competition by defeating the N.Y.A.C. 5-4 in the final round.

Twelve teams competed in this popular competition, and the final round was not over till the early hours of the morning.

The final match between the N.Y.A.C. and the Salle Santelli proved to be a very exciting climax. The winning team got away to an early lead when Lewis downed Every 5-4 and de Capriles beat Nunes 5-2. Huffman scored for the A.C. by turning back Dow 5-3, but then de Capriles defeated Every 5-3 and Dow won over Nunes 5-3 to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Santelli team. At this point, the New York A.C. settled down and began an uphill fight to even the score. Huffman and Nunes downed Lewis by 5-4, and Every routed Dow. The final bout of the evening, between Huffman and de Capriles, was a fast, well-fought match which reached 4-all before de Capriles managed to score the winning touch.

The Fencers Club, represented by Alessandroni, Block, and Wesselman, reached the semi-final round by defeating the Salle Scafati and Salle Santelli “B” teams. They were finally eliminated by the N.Y.A.C. 5-1. This competition marked the return of Bill Block to competitive fencing after an absence of several years.

The New York A.C.'s “B” team, considered one of the stronger combinations (Frank Ingoglia, Nick Murray, and Al Di Giacinta), was upset in the first round by a fighting Saltus Club team composed of Hal Elson, Ted Greene, and August van Munchhausen. Greene defeated Ingoglia 5-4 in the deciding match.

The Greco Fencing Academy put out the home club’s second team and was in turn eliminated by the N.Y.A.C. The Salle Vince was forced to bow to the Salle Santelli “B” team, while N.Y.U. eliminated C.C.N.Y. in the first round.
