NEW POLICY OF THE RIPOSTE
This, the last number of The Riposte’s second full year of existence, is the largest issue we have ever published. Beginning with the next number, The Riposte will appear monthly, instead of every two or three weeks, and each issue will be more than twice the average size of previous numbers.
This new policy of publication, we believe, will give you a more interesting and better-produced Riposte. Financially, we have managed to nearly break even during the last two years, thanks to the generous support of subscribers and advertisers. We have had NO EDITORIAL OR LABOR COSTS in the preparation of The Riposte for publication. We have found, however, that the tremendous labor involved in assembling, wrapping, and addressing The Riposte has often interfered with the editorial duties of the staff and has frequently caused delays in the distribution of The Riposte to our readers. The mailing costs also have represented relatively too large a part of the cost of publication. With the savings in time and money which monthly publication will make possible, we expect to be able to improve the quality of The Riposte.
We shall ensure timely distribution by enforcing a “dead line” on all articles to be published. We shall have a better opportunity to prepare and edit reports of competitions in greater detail than heretofore. Our growing list of voluntary contributions will find that our larger number of pages will enable us to print the very welcome articles more regularly.
The new monthly format of The Riposte will not result in any increase in the regular subscription price. One dollar will still buy all issues for six months. Naturally, however, the single issue price will be increased from 10 to 20 cents.
Our readers will remember that a year ago, the early January number of The Riposte for the first time appeared with a cover. In keeping with the policy of making improvements in our publication every year, our coming January number will appear in a cover of new design, linking the fencing of today to the glamorous past of our sport. We hope you will like it as much as we do.
