New England

The New England Interscholastic and Intercollegiate Fencing Association for boys and girls has been organized and sponsored by Coach Robert Grasson of Yale. A general meeting of all New England Fencing Coaches at the Y.M.C.A. College, Springfield, was held on December 5th.

The New England Interscholastic Three-Weapon Team Championship for Preparatory Schools is to be held on March 5th at Worcester Academy, Worcester, Mass. A trophy for this event will be procured through Coach Grasson, the promoter and organizer of the new association.

The New England Intercollegiate Three-Weapon Team Championship is to be held on March 12th at Brown University, in Providence, R.I. A beautiful trophy will be presented to the winner.

The New England Intercollegiate Foil Championship for women, between the following Colleges, will be held sometime in March at Smith College: Vassar, Smith, Mount Holyoke, Wellesley, and Albertus Magnus will compete. This is the first time in the history of fencing that all the above schools have been firmly organized. Most of the institutions have student amateur coaches or faculty members giving their part-time to the sport.

Coach Grasson will have monthly conventions with most of them, trying to assist and guide them in the proper way of coaching and organizing.

All members of the institutions have been invited to participate in the weekly A.F.L.A. tournaments held at Yale University, where they can obtain valuable competitive experience.

New Orleans

On December 28th, and annually thereafter sometime between Christmas and New Year, there will be held in this city a fencing event known as the New Orleans Golden Sword Tournament, which will be, in effect, the Southern Amateur Men's Indoor Individual Championship, open to all men amateur fencers, residents of the Southern States, in the three weapons.

On February 26th and 27th, and annually thereafter every Saturday and Sunday before Lent, there will be held a Mardi Gras Tournament open to all men and women amateur fencers. Canadian, United States, and Central American swordsmen will be particularly invited to this event. Trophies of many foreign countries are expected to be forthcoming, as in the past.

The latest rules of the A.F.L.A. shall govern all competitions. Contestants must pay their own expenses and assume all risks. Entry fees (50¢ per weapon) must accompany all entry blanks together with a certificate or pledge of amateur standing, and must reach New Orleans not later than a week before the date of the event. Correspondence in regard to accommodations will be given special attention. You should report and address all correspondence to Mr. James Janssen, Salle d’Armes de la Nouvelle Orleans, 528 Rue Royale, N.O., La.

During the coming spring and annually thereafter, New Orleans will hold its traditional Dueling Oaks Tournament, which will in effect be the Southern Amateur Outdoor Individual Championships in all weapons. When the exact dates are fixed, we will notify you.
