NATIONAL EPEE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Thursday, June 29, 1939
The Fencers Club of New York, after a lapse of one year, recovered its preeminent position in epee team competition in most spectacular style. It accomplished this by completely overwhelming the rest of the field in losing only 1½ bouts throughout its five team matches. The fact of their winning may not have been surprising, although they were faced by a group of potentially strong teams, any one of whom might have been expected to win some bouts. Furthermore, the Fencers Club team used two of its members who had not participated in team competition throughout the season. Lt. Gustave Heiss, having spent part of the year at Fort Warren in Wyoming and part in Salt Lake City, had only his record of previous years to recommend him. Norman Armitage, a sabre man first and always, joined the team to complete the trio. Tracy Jaeckel, the newly crowned Outdoor Epee Champion, was the only authentic team member fresh from the Fencers Club and Rene Pinchard's tutelage.
The surprise of the tournament was the second place that went to the Illinois Division team, which defeated both the Los Angeles A.C. and the Salle Santelli, each of whose teams was made up of ranking fencers or men with Olympic team experience.
