AN OPEN LETTER TO MR. NADI
Dear Mr. Nadi:
Since "courtesy only" prompted you to answer our letter, we should have expected a more courteous answer.
You are offended—offensively offended, and we apologize. To offend you was far from our intention.
However, we notice that we are talking about two quite different things. You may say that anyone who will rather lose than win in bad style is no fighter. You may be right, but our club is a fencing club. Ladies and gentlemen do not fight, they fence.
For the champion who made the clever remark to you, I have only a broad smile. It certainly was a cute remark, indicating that he must be a very cute fellow. (I was a fencer at least five years before you were born, Mr. Nadi, and I can afford to smile.).
There is nothing else we should like to know; there may be a few things that we feel you should be told, but we will gladly leave that to someone else, since we do not choose to debate any question with an angry man.
Good bye Mr. Nadi. We salute you and leave the strip with as much poise and grace as we have left.
Sincerely yours,
Svend Rasmussen
The Reading Fencing Club
