TED GOLD WINS JUNIOR FOIL TITLE
Giolito and Grasso tie for runner-up honors.
Theodore Gold of the Salle Santelli, former national junior and intercollegiate epee champion, added the national junior foils crown to his long list of fencing laurels by topping a brilliant field at the Greco Fencing Academy.
The twenty contenders for the title included qualifiers from New York, New Jersey, Long Island, Connecticut and Philadelphia.
Gold qualified easily for the final pool of 8, although he dropped a close decision to Sidney Kaplan of the Salle Vince. Once in the finals, however, fencing with beautiful precision, Gold set back his first six opponents and clinched the title before dropping his final encounter to Silvio Giolito of N.Y.U. The latter swept through his first four bouts in the preliminary in spectacular fashion, and earned the second-place medal for the second straight year by a margin of 5 touches over Maurice Grasso of Yale, the intercollegiate champion and one of the pre-tournament favorites. Giolito and Grasso each won five bouts and lost two, the former being defeated by Grasso and by Henry Wesselman of the Fencers Club, the latter by Gold and by Wallace Goldsmith of the New York A. C. Goldsmith, incidentally, squeezed through into the final by a three-touch margin over Philip Shakespeare of Philadelphia. Dan Bukantz of C. C. N. Y., co-favorite with Gold and Grasso, was off his best game and won only once in the final pool.
