Fencers Club Star defeats Mrs. Vokral in Fence-Off

Carol Alessandroni of the Fencers Club, runner up to Helene Mayer of California for the Women's National Championship last spring, scored her first victory of the season — and a brilliant one — in winning the Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish Senior competition.

Miss Alessandroni, who won eight bouts in a row before dropping her last encounter 5-4 to Madeline Dalton of the Salle Vince, was forced into a fence-off with Mrs. Jerry Vokral of Philadelphia, who also won eight bouts, losing only to Miss Alessandroni, 5-4. In the fence-off, the Fencers Club ace got off to a flying start, leading 2-0, and then at 4-1. Then Mrs. Vokral, whose sound technique is excelled only by her great fighting heart, pulled even at 4-all, scoring on two ripostes and a coule attack. In the deciding exchange Miss Alessandroni found the blade on Mrs. Vokral's feint and scored by a split-second on a perfectly executed counter-attack.

Miss Dalton was third with 6 victories in 9 bouts. Maria Cerra, Mildred Stewart, and Mrs. Taylor placed in that order on touches after tying with 5 victories. Barbara Cochrane won 4, and the usually steady Mrs. Dolly Funke dropped to 8th with 3 victories and 6 defeats, 3 of the latter being 5-4 bouts. Miss Jones and Miss Burnside were outclassed.

The only disappointment in the competition was the inability of Miss Dorothy B. Locke, former national champion, to return to competition after an absence of over a year. Miss Locke was ready to fence, when an urgent telephone call notified her of serious illness in her immediate family, and she scratched her entry in order to return home at once.
