Dueling in the Italian Army

A little paragraph in the New York Times tells us of a new duelling code for the Italian Army. Hitherto, the military code made it obligatory for officers to fight if challenged or insulted, while the civil code forbade all duels and made participants and seconds liable to severe penalties.

A new regulation will attempt to harmonize the codes. Officers will still be required to fight if challenged or insulted, and will be tried after duels in military courts. The judges, however, may kill the proceedings if the duels were "caused by motives of particular moral value".

The Columbia Rapier Club Gala

A good portion of the Metropolitan fencers attended the annual Rapier Club Gala at John Jay Hall last month. The affair, given in honor of the visiting Cornell fencing team, was an extremely colorful event. Exhibitions in the three weapons were given by Mr. Santelli and Mr. Argento and several distinguished amateur swordsmen. Mr. Forest Lombaer was an admirable master of ceremonies, and the Columbia Blue Lions provided an excellent program of dance music. We feel sure that all who attended will look forward to next year's party.
