STUYVESANT HIGH WINS BIDDLE TROPHY
Defeats Barrington H. S. in Thrilling Finish
The Anthony J. Drexel Biddle trophy, emblematic of the metropolitan championship for preparatory and high school fencers, became the permanent possession of Stuyvesant High School of New York, when its team scored by defeating Barringer High School of Newark, winners of the first tournament in 1934, by a score of 5 bouts to 4. New Rochelle High School defeated Textile High School for the third place medals by a similar score. Thirty-one schools were represented in this year's tournament, which was held under the auspices of New York University.
Sixteen teams were qualified by the round-robin method from eight pools in the morning session, and the competition then progressed by direct elimination. Stuyvesant and Barringer, each seeded at the top of the draw for their respective halves, mowed down all opposition with little difficulty, and the final match was a thrilling struggle between the two best teams in the tournament.
Barringer jumped into the lead 2-0, was tied at 2-all, led again at 3-2, and was tied again at 3-all. Stuyvesant then went into the lead for the first time when, in a beautifully fenced bout, Austen Prokop defeated Harry Boutsikaris 5-4. Barringer came back to even the score as Robert Girardot defeated Arthur Tauber 5-3, but Albert Axelrod of Stuyvesant conquered Paul Brienza, the Barringer captain, 5-3 in the deciding bout.
Girardot was the hero of the evening, as he defeated all three of the members of the winning team. Prokop was the Stuyvesant leader but his performance was only a shade better than that of his team-mates.
