en THE FENCING EXHIBITION LAST NIGHT.

The Tournament at Platt’s Hall, for the benefit of Colonel Monstery, proved a decided success; the house was well filled, and the fencing, sparring and gymnastics were warmly applauded. Mr. Wilder’s balancing on the ladder was very gracefully executed: Mr. Bennett’s club-swinging was truly Herculean; while Mr. Jacoby’s ring and dumb-bell feats place him beyond all competitors. The fencing was conducted with great spirit—the most notable display being between Mr. Cohn and Captain Dawes. Colonel Tittel, Messrs. Johnson, Clement, Gibbons, Rakow, Day and Bernhamer each won a share of the applause. Col. Monstery showed to fine advantage in the rapier fencing, and in the assault a la academie—in this last executing a splendid “octave disarm” that sent the sword of his competitor flying out of his hand up to the roof. The bayonet fencing of Capt. Lake and Col. Tittel, and of the latter with Capt. Dawer, was very scientific. Professor Clark and Mr. Bennett astonished the audience with the rapidity of their blows in the sparring, and narrowly escaped an encore. The entertainment wound up with a bayonet attack on Col. Monstery, who successfully defended himself with a sabre.
