TRONCHET’S MIND WEAKENS.
—
Fencing Master in Serious Condition and Causes Trouble.
SACRAMENTO, September 17.—Professor Louis Tronchet, for fifteen years fencing master of the Olympic Club in San Francisco and quondam sword champion of the United States by virtue of his defeat of America’s expert in New York twenty-five years ago, has shown unmistakable evidence of insanity by various acts while on outings in this county.
It appears that Tronchet was discharged from a sanitarium in Oakland but three weeks ago, and that his wife has been taking him since on daily trips in the neighborhood of Mill Valley in the hope that they might benefit him. About a week ago her husband stepped away from her, engaged a rig at a livery stable and entered upon a wild drive across country. He was arrested on a charge of malicious mischief and was condemned to two days in the County Jail. After half of the penalty had been undergone by him, his wife informed Justice Pryor of Tronchet’s condition and obtained an order of release.
This evening Tronchet again eluded the watchfulness of his wife and running across the marsh to Manzanita station leaped over the fence enclosing the railroad track, came in contact with the live rail and received a severe shock. At the same time the 6:25 south-bound train was approaching, which was brought to a stop but a foot from where he lay. Tronchet was taken aboard and carried to the city.
