Coming Olympic Games Cause Enthusiasm With the Foils
Stockholm, November 25. – This winter promises to bring an extraordinary boom to women’s fencing clubs in Scandinavia. The forthcoming Olympic games are partly responsible, for there is general enthusiasm for athletics. More powerful than that, however, is the belief among stylish women that fencing is by far the best exercise for developing an easy and graceful carriage.
Here in the Swedish capital the women’s fencing club is one of the most exclusive and fashionable organizations in the city. The Crown Princess is a patron, and often attends the 5 o’clock teas given there, along with the Crown Prince, who finds the headquarters a charming social rendezvous.
The founder of the club, Miss Janken Wlot-Hanson, is a notable pupil of the famous French master of the foils, Fillot. Some years ago she won the first prize in the international match at Tourcoing, near Lille.
Since then her skill and enthusiasm have made this Stockholm club famous in fencing circles throughout Europe. French instructors are on the staff of the club, and every afternoon sees merry bouts in the splendid hall. There the members are taught to use the foils with either left or right hand at will, and they are loud in praise of the pastime as an aid to beauty. International matches are a feature of every season, competing teams coming from England, France and elsewhere to measure their dexterity with that of the northern experts. Visitors to the Olympic games next year will see some of these supple Scandinavians doing lightning stunts with the foils.
