E. Phélippon This chapter from "Amateurs et salles d'armes de Paris" by Adolphe Tavernier focuses on E. Phélippon, an archetype of the gentleman farmer who prefers the open air and vigorous outdoor activities to the urban life of Paris. A true sportsman, Phélippon spends much of the year on his estates in the countryside, returning to Paris only to engage in his favorite sports like horseback riding and fencing. Trained by the renowned master Charles Ruzé, Phélippon has become one of the strongest fencers at the salle on rue de la Bienfaisance, despite his periodic absences and a serious horse-riding accident. His powerful physique and strategic approach make him a formidable opponent, excelling in both attack and defense. Although he seldom participates in public bouts, his rare appearances have seen him match up impressively against some of the top fencers of his time.
